They’re built for different jobs, and picking the wrong one is one of the more expensive mistakes a plant can make early in a project.

What HFFS and VFFS Actually Do Differently?

Both machine types form a pouch or sachet from a roll of film, fill it with product, and seal it; the core idea is the same. The difference is in how the product moves through the machine.

A horizontal form-fill-seal machine feeds film horizontally and builds the pack around the product as it moves along the line. This makes it a natural fit for solid, pre-formed, or delicate items, things like bars, biscuits, sachets with tablets, or anything that shouldn’t drop, tumble, or get crushed during filling.

A vertical form-fill-seal machine forms the pouch vertically, so gravity does much of the work; the product drops down into the pack as it’s formed and sealed. This makes VFFS the go-to choice for powders, granules, liquids, and free-flowing products where drop-filling is efficient and clean.

Where Each One Wins

HFFS tends to be the better fit when:

  • Your product is solid, fragile, or needs precise placement (not just dropped in)
  • You’re packing multiple items per pouch in a specific arrangement
  • Product orientation matters for the final pack appearance
  • You need flexibility across pouch shapes, stand-up pouches, flat sachets, blister-style packs

VFFS tends to be the better fit when:

  • You’re packing powders, granules, liquids, or small free-flowing items

  1. Look at your product first, not the machine.
    Free-flowing = VFFS. Solid, delicate, or precisely arranged = HFFS.
  2. Check your floor plan.
    Tight space often favours VFFS’s smaller footprint.
  3. Think about pack format flexibility.
    If you expect to introduce new pouch styles, HFFS generally offers more room to adapt.
  4. Talk to someone who’s installed both.
    Spec sheets can’t tell you how a machine behaves with your actual product.
